Love Thy Neighbor (Or Stranger) - Lindsay Schmidt

She sits alone on her kitchen floor, tears streaming down her face. Bruises cover her body. She is scared and feels alone in the world. She feels stuck in this life she never dreamed for herself. He gulps down another drink and gets all the more angry. She wishes for a way out of this life of pain. Exodus 14:14 - The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

He entered his work place at the same time every day. He goes through the motions. He puts on a smile to cover up the unhappiness he feels in his heart. There is an emptiness there that he cannot fill no matter how hard he tries. Psalm 94:19 - In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

He goes to school day after day. The same kids pushing, pointing, laughing. He puts on a brave face. His momma wouldn’t be able to handle the truth about what happens to him once he leaves home. They call him names. He tries to deal with it all on his own but it’s getting harder every day. He just wants it all the stop, end and be done. He’s losing hope. Deuteronomy 31:6 - Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

She sits at home day after day. Sits on the floor with the kids. Plays games. Laughs and smiles. Tells jokes to hear little giggles. Makes food. Cleans the house. Then, when the moon shines, she puts her babies to bed only to wake up and do it again tomorrow. She is alone. Daddy is gone, sitting in a jail cell. She needs strength. Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

He stays busy. It’s how he copes. He goes to work. Sees patient after patient. Drinks coffee number one, then two, then three trying to stay awake after a 24 hour shift. He hears babies crying, a woman screaming in pain, a little boy cries for his mother to be by his side. He does what he knows to do. But he can’t save them all. He has lost some. Finally he goes home to a quiet, empty house and tries to turn off his mind but it keeps ringing with the voices from today’s patients. He will never forget the ones that were lost, the ones he couldn’t save. The memories fill his mind day after day. Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

Everyone. Our neighbors, brothers, aunts, doctors, strangers, children, mommas and daddy’s. Everyone needs what God has. Joy, love, peace, strength, wisdom, grace, hope, a better life, a way out. God can do it all. I thank God every single day for bringing me into this beautiful life I live. I talk to people daily who do not know the Lord. It’s easy to start a conversation. To give a word of wisdom, of love, of prayer. Our job is easy. We love and we pray and we speak truth into lost souls. God does all the rest. It is in him where we find everything we need. John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

These people I’ve written about, you may not know them all, but I bet you know one. And the others, they are out there in the world somewhere. Fighting to get by everyday, needing a loving and helping hand. I have witnessed that outstretched hand toward me and want to do the same for someone else. God is no respecter of man. He loves each and every one of us equally. He sees the need. That is why he sends us, the ones who have been through the rough times but God has brought us out, to tell our stories to those who are where we once were. Or maybe we have no clue what someone is going through, offer to pray. Prayer is the the bridge from a person in need to God. Let us all do our part, the one we were created to do, so that God can do his. Don’t listen with your ears, open up your heart to those around you and I promise you will hear their cry. When you do, just listen, the rest will come from God.
